First-Timer’s Guide to Sound Immersion Therapy

If you’ve never been to a sound immersion (also called a sound bath or sound healing) before, you might be wondering… What actually happens? Will I need to do anything? What if I fall asleep?
Relax — this is your time to let go, and there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to experience it.
Here’s what you can expect:
1. A Warm Welcome
When you arrive, you’ll step into a calm, cosy space. Think soft lighting, comfortable mats, and maybe the scent of incense or essential oils. You’ll choose your spot and get comfortable — lying down or sitting is fine.
2. Time to Settle In
Your facilitator will introduce the session, the instruments, and guide you to take a few deep breaths. You might be invited to set an intention, like “I want to feel relaxed” or “I’m open to whatever comes.”
3. The Sound Journey Begins
You’ll hear (and feel) waves of sound from instruments like crystal singing bowls, gongs, chimes, or drums. Some sounds might feel like they’re moving right through you — that’s the vibrations doing their work, helping you shift into a deeply relaxed state.
4. Your Experience Will Be Unique
Everyone’s journey is different. You might feel warmth, tingles, or a sense of floating. You might see colours or images in your mind. You might even drift off to sleep (totally fine!). Whatever happens, it’s all part of the process.
5. Coming Back Gently
Towards the end, the sounds will soften, giving you time to slowly return to the room. You’ll have a few moments to stretch, open your eyes, and take it all in before you head out into the world again — hopefully feeling lighter, calmer, and more grounded.
Final Tip:
Come with an open mind, wear comfy clothes, and let the sounds carry you. Your first sound immersion won’t be your last — once you’ve felt the calm it brings, you’ll want to experience it again.
